Online music sharing is set to explode in 2009 as the popularity of sites like Last.fm and Blip.fm are starting to reach Twitter like status in social networking circles. Gone seem to be the days when the threat of legal action from record labels were the deterrent for getting your music fix online. If you wanted to get your music fix online you had to purchase the tunes from your favorite online store for either iTunes or anotherMP3 selling site.
I know for people that spend their days on the computer with access to the internet being able to do a search for a song on one of these sites and immediately listen to that song is a big plus. Especially when the service is a free one. I am especially enjoying the Blip.fm service because you can automatically hook it into your Twitter account as well. So when you “blip” a song you are also notifying all your twitter friends of what song you happen to be listening to at that moment.
I especially like these sites because depending on who you make friends with will determine the type of music you may here in your “twitter like list” of friends songs that they are listening to. This is a great way to discover music that you may not have ever considered and artist that you may have never considered listening to.
For example the last couple of songs that I have purchased from iTunes is only because they were discovered while doing my work and listening to my blip account. I would highly recommend getting a free Blip.fm account putting looking up a few of your favorite songs and start collecting some friends that have also played those songs. You will be amazed what songs you will hear thanks to your new DJ friends.
