Sansa SlotMusic Player Does Not Make Much Sensa

About a month ago SanDisk announced a new format for music distribution called slot music. Needless to say this announcement hit all the normal media outlets of press releases and also received a fair amount of blog traffic on the subject. Any way the overwhelming response that I saw in comments and blogs for another music format was, really? Another format, why? SanDisk apparently did not give much credo to the responses in the blogosphere and pressed on with their plans.

So here we are a month later and the release of a new music format is shipping out to big box stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy. At the beginning of this new format will be the release of a little bit more than 30 artists from EMI Music, SONY BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group with more releases to follow. The slotMusic cards are being released at a price of $14.99. SanDisks is hoping that 1GIG size of their cards will encourage people not only to buy the new music format but use it to add their own music to the cards as well.

slotmusicTo help stimulate the purchasing interest in this new format SanDisks also announced the release of a SlotMusic player called Sansa. The Sansa player is priced at $19.99 and comes with the bare minimum of features comparable to the iPod shuffle. They are also releasing artist branded players for $34.99 which will have a preloaded card for the artist as well as an image of the artist on the player.

These are all great features and the pricing for all the products look to be right in the sweet spot for getting new music at an affordable price. There’s only one problem I see with the whole slotMusic scenario, it’s called an iPod, Zune, Zen and MP3 players. Digital downloadable music! Did SanDisk some how not recognize this little market that happens to rule the music world? Why oh why would there be any need to get SlotMusic? Can someone please explain, if not for a feeble attempt at making some money on trying to start a fad. Why is this really coming to market, has there been a crying out for a new music format that I have somehow not heard of?
